Eden Phillpotts letters, 1894-1942.

The collection consists of fourteen letters, including: twelve letters to Robert Barr, 1894-1911, friendly letters, chiefly about Phillpotts' writing, many written on Black and White letterhead; letter to My dear Edgett, 24 April 1923, responding to reports of unkind critical attention in America; to My dear sir, 21 Aug. 1942, describing a bad performance of one of his plays: "... had I not written it myself, [I] should not have known what it was all about."

Edwin Francis Edgett (1867-1946) was the dramatic editor of the Boston Evening Transcript, and an 1894 graduate of Harvard College. He published multiple books on theater and theater history, including Slings And Arrows. He was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, was married to Evelyn Torrey Edgett, who was born in 1869, and he died in Cambridge, Massachusetts....

Humorist and author Robert Barr was born in Scotland, and raised in Canada, where he became headmaster of a school in Ontario. He published a humorous sketch of a boating trip in the Detroit Free Press under the pseudonym Luke Sharp, and embarked on a diverse and successful career in literature.
